Extra credit: Goebbels
Goebbels was a narcissist, in his diary he was constantly putting himself above others. Despite the fact that his position in the Nazi government was really unimportant, he viewed himself to be a great leader, on pare with Hitler. However, now days, no one even recognizes his name unless they have studied the Nazi Party during World War Two. I also got the vibe that Goebbels was normally in a mood, almost bi-polar. Goebbels seemed to be both extraordinarily happy and uplifting towards others, or he would be the most oppressive person in the whole of Germany. When dealing with Hitler, Goebbels would either be respectful and bursting with admiration for the man, or he would be condescending of Hitler.
The Hiding place
ReplyDeleteThe Hiding place is about a Christian Family in the Netherlands during the late 1930’s, Hitler had just invaded the country in a Blitzkrieg, and the people were suffering. Jews were suffering the most, they were rounded up and shoved into the ghettos until it came time to kill them in concentration camps. Radios were banned, helping a Jew was forbidden, and even having a Jew in your house was looked down upon.
In the mist of the chaos, one Christian family sought to provide people with a safe refuge, this meant putting their lives in danger to allow Jews, people that they didn’t even know to stay in their house for a period of time. These people had ranging personalities, from open and joyful, to closed and unfriendly, they had to work together to stay out of harm’s way. This meant working with the resistance to beat the Nazi’s and to provide Jews with a way out of the Netherlands. The ten Booms were however eventually caught when an undercover Gestapo officer posed as a Jew needing a place to stay for a while. The Germans did not find any of the Jews in the house as the Ten’ Booms had created a hiding place in a closet. The ten Booms were none the less taken to a work and hard labor camp.
Over all the film proved to be educational and very interesting. The story of the tem Booms was a heart touching one, it provided an interesting insight into the lives of the conquered people. At the end of the movie the younger sister is released from the camp after her father and sister had both passed away and she had converted many people to Christ. Just like her sister had said she would be, she was released before the New Year, because her file had been misfiled. Had she not been released, she would have been killed in the gas chambers a few days later.
