In Stanton L. Jones' essay, "Homosexuality: The Use of Science Research In the Church's Moral Debate", he explains all of his research and what he found on the topic with homosexuality dealing within the church. The way this essay is arranged is it is a summary of a seminar that he was at. He takes each argument and then gives a answer based on his research. Most of the arguments deal with what the bible says and teaches about homosexuality and other issues in our society. For example, "what causes homosexuality" He goes on to explain the whole "born this way" topic and how people believe that if it isn't a choice then it isn't a sin. He then goes on to explain how the bible doesn't condemn homosexuality but homosexual acts. Its one thing to be attracted to the same sex but to go through with the actions is where people don't understand that it is controllable. The rest of the article goes on to explain other factors of homosexuality and his view on them.
ReplyDeleteIn the article by Stanton L. Jones essay, “Homosexuality: The Use of Science Research in the Church's Morals Debate. He introduces us to all of the arguments and research from his book (Jones & Yarhouse, 2000). The essay is arranged in a special way because it is a summery of an event that he attended. Jones took each one of the arguments from the seminar, and researched each one and gave his own opinion on them. Almost every arguments was ether about problems with our generation today, and also about the issue of homosexuality and his belief on it. An example of the arguments is “ The bible, the authoritative word of god, is clear in its condemnation of homosexual conduct”. Jones goes on to explain that that “condemnation is not a major focus of scripture, but the condemnation conduct in these passages is pervasive, absolute, and severe”. Meaning yeah homosexuality might not be a major focus in scripture, but in our society today it is one of the major problems we are having in the christian community. The rest of the article is just his views and beliefs of homosexuality.

Jones
In his essay, Mr. Jones answers the question that Christians are commonly asked , “why is homosexuality wrong?” In his essay he gives the common answer; because scripture says so, then what is often thought of as the game-ender, where the person asking is supposed to get on their knees, repent of their sin’s in tears, and then live a sinless life. This NEVER happens. There is always a counter argument, well is it there fault? If so is there a way out? Overall Jones does a great job supporting his argument, and respectively dismissing the counterargument.

In Shanton L. Jones' essay: "Homosexuality: The Use Of Scientific Research In The Church's Moral Debate", Jones describes many arguments that anyone could try to argue against why homosexuality is wrong. He reviews many different studies about how being gay could possibly be a mental illness, genetic, hormonal problem or have to do with psychological and environmental factors. Jones even gives us the exact information table from the studies so we can see the percentage numbers with our own eyes. However, despite how well the studies have been explained, they all have their flaws. Jones also tells us that studies and anything scientifically proven about being homosexual does not change the Christian's view on practicing homosexual acts. It is still wrong simply because God says it is wrong and it dishonors God.

Dr. Stanton L. Jones Summary
To start off Dr. Jones states "There is a broad and positive view of sexuality of the Bible." Indeed there is and like Dr. Jones states "The consummation of a
heterosexual marriage in sexual intercourse has been viewed as creating a divinely-blessed and intended outcome, a “one flesh” union between wife and husband." So why do so many people question the word of God? There is a fine line between crazy and stupid and "Gays" are both combined in one. The lifestyle that they have chosen will not get them further in life and after they die what will they do, ask for forgiveness and then turn their backs on God. Dr. Jones clearly identifies these and many other points on how homosexuality " the scientific evidence is much less clear and conclusive than the lay public typically believes, and is far from persuasive." Another point Dr. Jones makes is "the logic by which the scientific evidences are applied to the moral problem of homosexuality are most often deeply flawed and confused." Now, as the famous show "Cops" always said, "What you gonna do when they come for you."

Dr. Stanton L. Jones Research Findings
Dr. Stanton L. Jones attended a presentation at Wheaton College regarding the subject of Science vs The Church on Moral Debate. In the essay, there are many examples of a scientific fallacy in which Jones corrects the issue. Dr. Jones mentions several Biblical passages in which God addresses issues such as homosexuality, bestiality, incest, fornication, and adultery. He counters each scientific “result” with a logical, Biblical truth. He says that though the Bible is not very specific about each and every above listed sin, we will all be tempted by them somehow, some way. With a society that is becoming more accepting and condoning of sexually related sins, it’s great to have men like Dr. Jones to dig through the junk and find the truth.

Dr. Stanton L. Jones- Summary
Dr. Stanton summarized a presentation he went to and talked about all of the major key topics from the presentation. “The main focus of the presentation was to establish that there is nothing persuasive presented in contemporary scientific research that renders invalid the classical ethical judgment of the Christian Church about homosexual conduct.” This is what his summarized main focus was about the presentation. “Our sexuality, like the entirety of our character, is broken and twisted. We experience desires, motives, feelings, and impulses that were never intended by God and which in fact grieve God.” This explains how we have so far away from what God has intended for us and how we act upon bad desires our body wants. It is estimated that about 10% of the population practice homosexuality and this is a big concern that we should have. Even though some scientist may try to argue that some people are born that we that is when we refer to the Bible and see otherwise.

Dr. Jones's essay, writing in response to the CCCU's presentation on the Consultation on Human Sexuality, gives counter argument to their "scientific research" in terms of the bibles intent for sexuality, the science/causes behind sexual orientation, and if orientation/attraction is changeable. He begins by addressing the belief that there is a broad and positive view of sexuality in the bible, explaining that the Bible does no such thing. "Human beings are sexual, male and female, physical beings by creational intent". The bible tells us that men were designed for woman and vice versa, that together the two create "one flesh." The author then displays some of possible causes of homosexuality and excuses for why it's okay. Many people argue that sexuality is determined by you genetics and that it can't be a sin if its an "involuntary" identity, but jones takes us back to scripture in that God condemns only homosexual acts. Someone with homosexual attraction, no matter what his genes may say (which sexuality has not proven to be generic), he still has the choice to act on the attraction in any situation.
Finally the last topic of discussion is the ability for people who are same-sex oriented to change. Jones brings up studies and research that has been done concluding that change is possible. The research is compared along side with sexual perversions, which also have success rates in change. Overall the author tells us that regardless of weather one can truly change to homosexual attraction, leaving a sinful life behind and searching for Gods plan for you life is of upmost importance.
