wk5 - Gaga, Macklemore, AND . . . ?

Think about the Lady Gaga and Macklemore examples I have provided and do a little research of the culture for yourself. Provide just one example where an artist/cable series/film, (etc.) speaks with conviction (takes a stand—makes a truth claim) regarding the issue of human sexuality.

NOTE: After posting on the blog, open up the CANVAS assignment (by the same name) and DO copy and paste the URL address into the CANVAS "WEB URL" text box so that I have record of your submission on Canvas. Thanks.

In an interview in 2011 with glamour magazine Jessie J said she didn’t know what the fuss was all about when she came out as a bisexual. Also She said, "It’s important for me to be open and honest." Also that stuff happens and made her realize that she doesn’t got time to waste.

With an interview with TIME a few months ago, Miley Cyrus comes out as "gender fluid." She tells TIME, "I'm just equal. I'm just even. It has nothing to do with any parts of me or how I dress or how I look. It's literally just how I feel."

when lady Gaga was in an interview with Andy Cohen, she joked about being a lesbian, saying that she has "takin a few dips in the lady pond before." she also said "you know what? its not a lie that I am bisexual and like women, and anyone that wants to twist this into 'she says she's bisexual for marketing,' this is a ---- lie. this is who I am and who I have always been."

  6. Sam smith is a gay pop and rock artist. He recently came out and talks about it in a article. In consequences of sound (name of the article company) He talks about one of his songs “ in the lonely hour”. Sam smith states in the article: In The Lonely Hour is inspired by “unrequited relationships,” specifically “a guy that I fell in love with last year, and he didn’t love me back.” Smith continued: “I think I’m over it now, but I was in a very dark place. I kept feeling lonely in the fact that I hadn’t felt love before. I’ve felt the bad things. And what’s a more powerful emotion: pain or happiness

  7. Frank Ocean described his feelings in a Tumblr post. The words he said led people to believe he was either bisexual or gay. He stated he fell in love with another man and described the summers he spent with him as a young adult. He closes his post with this,"I feel like a free man. If I listen closely.. I can hear the sky falling too."

An NFL player came out saying, “I am openly, proud gay man” during an interview. He became the first ever player in the NFL to be openly gay. Since a lot of people already knew, he didn’t want someone to say his personal information so he said it on his own on television. He said that “no one else should tell my story but me.”

Along with the songs “Born This Way” and “Same Love” shows also incorporate same-sex sermons and messages to their audience. The show “Friends” is about six friends in New York going through everyday life. Relationships being one of those parts of life, many of the characters date and sleep with numerous people on the show. Most of the time these are heterosexual relations, but when homosexual relationships take place nobody treats it as an unusual thing. In some episodes it seems as if it’s almost being praised. For example, one of the characters, Ross, plans to marry his girlfriend that he soon finds out claims to be a lesbian in love with another woman. Heartbroken at first, Ross finally comes to his “senses” and decides to support her and the baby that they would have had together. This is one of the few examples in the show that is introduced only in the first season.

Summary – “Take Me to Church” – Hozier
Hozier makes the true statement about homosexuality that heterosexuals condemn gay people. In the line “’We were born sick’, you heard them say it,” he is referring to how straight people would call a gay person “sick” (not implying that homosexuality is a disease, rather that it’s a wrong condition). This is a form of humiliation for the homosexuals. In the video, there is a gang of straight people trying to terrorize a gay male couple. The gang drags one partner out to a bonfire and proceed to beat him. The other partner witnesses the end of this beating and the video ends. This kind of humiliation probably happens in real life, but not to this kind of extreme.

A few months ago Bruce Jenner, now known as Caitlyn, came out as a transgendered woman. Although she knew this her whole like, she recently was brave enough to speak out. On an interview with Diane Sawyer, was the first time Jenner stated that he identifies as a woman. Her first tweet said "I'm so happy after such a long struggle to be living with my true self. Welcome to the world Caitlyn. Can't wait for you to get to know her/me."
