wk6 - SIX – quotation sandwich

From Openness Unhindered, chapter six: “Conflict: When Sisters Disagree,” create a “quotation sandwich”: locate a pertinent quote, build a “frame” around it, and “blend” the author’s words with your own. While being fair and accurate, use the quote, but bend it to your purpose; use it for your “I say”—yes / no / okay, but.

NOTE: After posting on the blog, open up the CANVAS assignment (by the same name) and DO copy and paste the URL address into the CANVAS "WEB URL" text box so that I have record of your submission on Canvas. Thanks.

While reading in chapter 6 of “Openness Unhindered”. A pertinent quote that went with “When sisters disagree” in my mind is, “We do not want to come across as frauds”. “We do not want to defame the cause of Christ by the sin of self-deception”. To me I think every human being struggles with this. Because it’s so easy to go to church and say you’re a Christian. But then outside of that and the rest of your life you’re are committing sin and being what Rosaria Butterfield calls a “Fraud”. She then goes on further about being self-deception and that “we don’t want to defame the cause Christ”. What this says to me is that we don’t want to kill the reputation of Christ. Plus what Christ is trying speak to us in scripture, and then deny that you’re committing sin. Like Rosaria Butterfield says “we need to be on the same team and work together on this topic of homosexuality and also as Christians to listen to the opposite side so we can work together”. I agree with what Rosaria Butterfield 100%. Because I think as Christians we need to help the Frauds, and the ones who are going through hard times, or maybe just confused and work together so we can all glorify and serve our god.

The pertinent quote that stands out to me is when Mrs. Butterfield says "Christopher Yuan often says it this way: God is able, but not obligated, to give you what you ask for." This to me emphasize ‎Philippians 4:13 which states "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." Along with saying that God can give us riches but we shouldn't demand it if it is his will then he will be able to do it. Mrs. Butterfield goes on to say "Sexuality is not a choice (although Sexual activity is). Nor is it a lifestyle something that you put on and off with ease." This goes along with the earlier quote that God made human in his image but if one chooses to be gay then that is sin influencing ones decision from right and wrong. "How does one help when and young or old person struggles with homosexual desires?" This question has a few answers but the one that comes to my mind is why does one feel this way and what made you want this lifestyle? The people that struggle with this and claim to be christian are full of themselves and don't know what they are missing. this brings me back to my point which is Leviticus 20:13 "If a man shall sleep with another man as he does with woman he has committed an abomination and shall be condemned.

    Chapter 6 Quote

In chapter 6 of "Openness Unhindered" a quote that stuck out to me was in the last paragraph on page 146. Butterfield stated, "Friendship ad neighborly proximity are necessary components to working through theological differences in Christian love." Butterfield uses this quote to show her way of thinking with her friend Rebecca. Although Butterfield and Rebecca do not see eye to eye on the topic of homosexuality, they respect eachothers voice and listen with empathy to understand the thinking behind their opinion. Butterfield uses this quote as a summary of what she wanted the reader to get out of reading chapter 6. For this reason I believe that this is one of the more important quotes of the chapter. This quote spoke to me because in this society everyone speaks their opinion, yet no one listens to the other side to try and reach an agreement. If people would act like Butterfield then this world would have a better understanding of other views.

    Chapter Six Quotation Sandwich

Even though Butterfield and Rebecca disagree on several things, they have some things they do agree on and treat each other with respect. “Rebecca and I agree that sanctification is not coterminous with heterosexuality.” They agree that just because you practice heterosexuality, doesn’t mean you are in sanctification. “I share her desire for truthful self-representation.” Butterfield and Rebecca both want a true self-representation.

In chapter 6 of "Openness Unhindered", Butterfield teaches us how to approach people with different views on homosexuality. She tells us, "We therefore ought to stop and make sure we are really listening to each other... Not the "yes, but" listening the pounces on every point of confrontation." I think this is a very important quote because it is the most useful information in presenting your view to other people. If we don't "really listen" to what others have to say, not only do we sound like arrogant fools, but what we have to say is overlooked.

While reading Chapter 6 of "Openness Unhindered", I came across a quote in the middle of page 146. Dr. Butterfield tells us that "People are more than their positions (or problems)." This quote is relevant because in this chapter, she talks about her friend, Rebecca, who struggles with homosexual temptation and throughout the chapter, Butterfield talks about how despite Rebecca's temptations, she still considers Rebecca a sister in Christ. Dr. Butterfield tells us about how she can maintain a regular friendship with Rebecca because Rebecca is more than her sins. I agree with Dr. Butterfield because if you judge everybody based on their sins, you could miss out on a good friendship. Everybody struggles with some sort of temptation and everyone has problems that they are dealing with. You should look deeper than just that in a person because people are bigger than their positions and problems.

Framing a Quote: Chapter Six: “Openness Unhindered”

In chapter six of “Openness Unhindered” Rosaria Butterfield introduces a pertinent pertaining to prayer requests to God. “Christopher Yuan often says it this way: ‘God is able, but not obligated, to give you what you ask for.’” (140) I believe this quote is important to a Christian who is struggling with a particular issue in his or her life. This person may come to God in an hour of need and expect the best outcome for the situation. However, this is often not the case. Butterfield is using this quote to remind us that God always has our lives under control, and always has a plan to use us for his glory.

    Quotation Sandwich
In chapter 6 of the book "Openness Unhindered" I found a quote that really sticks out to me for many reasons. the quote says "God is able, but not obligated, to give you what you ask for." I think this quote is so good on many levels and I feel as though it could teach people a lot. when it is used in chapter six of the book, Butterfield is talking about homosexuality with this quote, and she whole heartedly agrees with the quote. I think this can pertain to a lot of peoples lives as well. Christians sometimes automatically think that because they went to church on Sunday then God will provide and give them what they need, and he very well could. I think that God would be more pleased and willing to answer your prayers if you not only practiced prayer on Sunday and only thought about him on Sunday, but you pray and acknowledge his existence every day.

    Quotation Sandwich
In this chapter Butterfield is kind of quoting someone, Christopher Yuan, and it's something that I agree with and have always thought about. "God is able, but not obligated, to give you what you ask for." Butterfield also agrees with this quote when she is talking about Rebecca's sexuality and identity. I believe this quote is something that many people do not really understand. People think God will give them what they need without realizing that He does not need to do that, especially if you are only seeking God when you need something. This is something I like to remind myself everyday, and I think everybody should too.
